Being someone who spends entirely too much time on the internet, I absolutely adore the app "StumbleUpon." If you're not familiar, it is an app that filters your interests and will randomly bring about different links to different websites on the internet. Sometimes it's pictures, sometimes it's websites, but it is a fun way to expand your normal go-to time wasters.
Living in Paris, I kind of feel like I'm in real life StumbleUpon. I love to walk around and get (slightly, but still with my map of Paris) lost and most of the time I stumble upon (literally) something incredible. I don't know the city well enough to know where I'm going, but there are hundreds of incredible things to discover.
Tonight after class, Ashley and I decided to stay in the city for a few reasons.
1. Ashley had been BEGGING to go to forever 21. Normally, I try to stray away from stores that we still have back in the states but she convinced me it would be worth it. Believe it or not, the forever 21 in Paris is ORGANIZED!!!!! And they have an even more amazing selection of clothes. I got to shop without getting a headache and I finally got some grey jeans I'd be dyingggg to find.
2. If you didn't know it's FASHION WEEK in Paris! Now....as I said before....I was born with the brain of a 10 year old boy and I lacked the "fashion gene" until about 1 year ago (if I even have it now....I'm not sure). Ashley, on the other hand, is a fashion guru and has a knack for spotting the cutest clothes and knowing so many amazing things about designers. So we decided to stalk about the buildings where we believed some fashion shows would be.
We were walking down the street, headed to our first location, when Ashley noticed something very strange going on. There were BMWs and Mercedes lining the streets with chauffeurs standing outside as if they were waiting for something big to happen. It seemed a little odd so we decided to walk toward a building with an opening and a small congregation of chauffeurs. As we peaked inside, we saw an ACTUAL FASHION WEEK SET UP. I was completely floored. Never before had I ever seen anything like it, and that was just a glimpse of the actual event. After freaking out about our unexpected discovery, Ashley was contemplating how we would get closer to the action.
We walked around to the other side of the building, in hopes of getting a better view of what was going on. Soon, we stumbled upon an enormous gate that lead to an extravagant entrance for an apparent fashion show. A man approached us and offered us a copy of the New York Times Style Magazine. We kindly accepted and asked him for more information on the current event. He said that it was the show for Lanvin, a high-fashion, Parisian company. He told us that if we stuck around for a bit, we might get to see some celebrities because Kim Kardashian and Kanye West just walked in...
........soooooo.......OBVIOUSLY WE DECIDED TO WAIT
After about 5 minutes of us waiting, the event seemed to come to its end. We sat right at the edge of the gate with the nice man who helped inform us of all the beautiful and important people walking right in front of our eyes. The first to come through the gates in her fancy car was Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue. Hundreds of beautiful, slender models ran by us in their perfectly composed outfits with paparazzi chasing hopefully behind them. As we sat watching in awe, our New York Times friend mentioned, "You see that Porsche right there? That's Kim and Kanye"
As we looked ahead, there they were. KIM AND KANYE. Okay I'm not going to lie, I don't reeeeeeeally like them. But you would freak out too if you saw them 2 feet away from you. There may have been a Porsche between us, but it was really surreal seeing Kim Kardashian and Kanye West being chased by the Paparazzi. Not to mention, that Porsche was absolutely beautiful. (Poor quality photos will be featured on facebook soon)
As the crowd seemed to head to the next destination, Ashley and I decided it was time to refuel and find the actual destination we had intended for in the beginning. We wandered down the glamorous streets of Paris, illuminated by the enormous windows of the rich and fabulous. It seemed as though every apartment in these streets was celebrating the holiday of Fashion Week. We happened upon a restaurant we had eaten at in our first week in Paris and decided to grab a bite to eat.
By the time we made it to the original destination, it seemed as though the party had already disappeared. The more I thought about it, the more it made sense. The best things that I have experienced here have all come without a plan. I think that is one of the most magical things about Paris, there is a surprise around every corner, you just have to be brave enough to go forward blindly.
Tonight felt absolutely unreal and I can't exactly put it into words, but I love this city and there's no place I'd rather be.
